UBER--

Uber has announced a trial of food delivery by drone with Flytrex Inc., marking its return to logistics experiments. The tests will begin in Uber Eats pilot markets by the end of the year, and Uber has made a financial investment into Flytrex to accelerate the technology. This deal marks a return to more ambitious bets for the now-profitable Uber, which previously tested McDonald's delivery by drone in San Diego in 2019.

Uber Technologies Inc. has announced a strategic partnership with Flytrex Inc. to trial food delivery by drone, marking a significant step in the evolution of logistics for the rideshare giant. The trial, which will commence in Uber Eats pilot markets by the end of the year, aims to leverage Flytrex's autonomous drone delivery system and Uber's extensive logistics network.

Uber's investment in Flytrex is part of its broader strategy to expand its delivery offerings, moving beyond traditional ground-based methods. The company previously tested drone delivery in San Diego in 2019, delivering McDonald's meals via its in-house aerial division, Uber Elevate. However, regulatory delays and the pandemic led to the division's winding down.

Flytrex, founded in 2013, has completed over 200,000 deliveries across the U.S., demonstrating the reliability and safety of its drones. The company operates with FAA-certified safety standards and is one of only four drone delivery providers authorized for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations. This partnership with Uber will integrate Flytrex's drone technology with Uber's global platform, enhancing last-mile logistics at scale.

The collaboration between Uber and Flytrex is expected to bring faster, safer, and more cost-efficient delivery solutions to consumers. Drone delivery has the potential to significantly reduce delivery times, lower costs, and cut emissions compared to traditional methods. This partnership underscores Uber's commitment to innovation and its strategy of strategic partnerships to drive growth.

Uber's mission to create opportunity through movement is evident in this latest venture. By integrating autonomous aerial delivery into its platform, Uber aims to reshape how food and other essentials move through cities, making faster, safer, and more sustainable delivery the new standard.
