Trump Reports No American Casualties And Minimal Damage
In a significant escalation of tensions in the Middle East, Iran retaliated against the U.S. for its recent airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites, with missile attacks on U.S. military bases in Qatar and Iraq. According to U.S. officials, there were no American casualties and minimal damage reported. The attacks come amidst ongoing hostilities between Israel and Iran, with Israel expanding its campaign to target sites symbolic of Iran's theocracy. The U.S. military base in Qatar, Al Udeid Air Base, was the primary target of Iran's retaliation. Qatar's Foreign Ministry condemned the attack, describing it as a "flagrant violation of Qatar's sovereignty, its airspace, and international law." The airbase houses the Combined Air Operations Center, which provides command and control of air power across the region, as well as the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing, the largest expeditionary wing in the world. Qatar Airways suspended all flights following the closure of air traffic in Qatar.
In Iraq, the Ain al-Assad base housing U.S. troops in western Iraq was also targeted, although Iran did not claim credit for this attack. It is not yet clear if there was any damage to the base or injuries.
The attacks follow a series of U.S. airstrikes on Iran's nuclear sites, including the Fordo enrichment facility, which the U.S. claims is part of Iran's nuclear program. Iran has retaliated by targeting Israeli cities, including Haifa and Tel Aviv, in a wave of missile attacks.
President Donald Trump, who has been actively involved in the conflict, stated on his Truth Social website that he did not seek a regime change in Iran but was open to the possibility if the current regime failed to make Iran "great again." White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt later described Trump's comments as simply raising a question.
The escalation of tensions has raised fears of a wider regional conflict, with Iran threatening to retaliate directly against U.S. troops or interests. Russia, one of Iran's closest allies, has called the attacks an "absolutely unprovoked aggression" and has met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to explore ways to de-escalate the situation.
