Thai Airways to Expand Fleet to 100 Aircraft in 2026 Amid Strategic Modernization

Thai Airways International (THAI) is advancing its fleet expansion plans, targeting a total of 100 aircraft in operations by year-end 2026, up from its current 79-aircraft fleet. This growth is driven by a combination of leased wide-body aircraft and new narrow-body deliveries, aligning with the airline's post-rehabilitation strategy to restore pre-pandemic capacity while enhancing operational efficiency.

The airline is finalizing a lease agreement for 10 Boeing 787-8 aircraft, sourced from Avolon of Iceland, with deliveries expected in June-July 2026. These aircraft, previously operated by China Southern Airlines, will address an impending shortage of wide-body planes as 10 older models reach retirement this year. THAI also awaits the delivery of 45 new Boeing 787s starting in 2028.

Simultaneously, THAI has begun receiving its first Airbus A321neo narrow-body aircraft, with 32 units ordered to bolster regional connectivity. The inaugural A321neo, named "Bowonrangsi," entered service in December 2025 and features a 20% improvement in fuel efficiency compared to older models, alongside reduced CO2 emissions and enhanced cabin amenities. Sixteen of these aircraft are slated for delivery in 2026, with the full order to be completed by 2028.

The fleet expansion is projected to increase capacity by over 5% in 2026, supporting a 7% rise in passenger numbers—equivalent to 1 million additional travelers. THAI's CEO, Chai Eamsiri, noted that the airline's financial performance in 2025 met expectations, with no accumulated losses and retained earnings achieved. Improved EBITDA and revenue in 2026 are anticipated, with dividend payments under consideration if profitability thresholds are met.

Strategically, THAI is leveraging the A321neo fleet to strengthen routes across China, India, and ASEAN markets, including new services to Chongqing, Changsha, and Shenzhen. The airline is also diversifying revenue streams by focusing on transit passengers connecting to third-country destinations, mitigating risks from Thailand's slower GDP growth.

With global aircraft production still constrained, THAI's proactive procurement and leasing strategies aim to maintain operational resilience while positioning the airline for sustained growth in the Asia-Pacific aviation sector.
