According to records posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website, Tesla (TSLA.US) is voluntarily recalling 376,241 vehicles in the United States to fix a problem that could cause the power-assisted steering system to fail.

The recall involves Model 3 and Model Y vehicles produced between February 28, 2023 and October 11, 2023 and sold in the U.S. market, equipped with a specific version of old software, according to a safety recall report on the NHTSA website.

The documents show that the affected vehicles' steering systems may be damaged due to overloading, which could cause the power-assisted steering to fail when the Tesla vehicle accelerates from a stationary position. Once the electronic power-assisted steering system fails, the driver needs to apply more force to control the steering wheel, increasing the risk of a collision.

Tesla told regulators that it has not received any crash or injury reports related to the issue. To fix the problem, Tesla will repair the vehicles through an OTA (Over-the-Air) remote software update, without the need for owners to visit a service center in person.

It is noteworthy that Trump appointed Tesla CEO Musk to lead a team to cut federal government personnel and regulatory agencies, which even eliminated entire regulatory agencies in some cases.

These cuts have already affected NHTSA, which has long been viewed by Musk as an obstacle to some of Tesla's technological advancements. Currently, NHTSA is still conducting a long-running safety investigation into Tesla's Autopilot self-driving assistance system and FSD. According to foreign media reports, Musk's team has implemented large-scale layoffs at NHTSA, cutting about 10% of the agency's workforce, affecting its ability to investigate companies including Tesla.

Tesla (TSLA.US) closed 4.68% lower on Friday at $337.8.
