Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs has affirmed its ability to ensure uninterrupted domestic gas supply, addressing concerns over energy security amid geopolitical tensions and shifting import strategies. The ministry cited robust contingency planning and diversified procurement as key factors in maintaining stability.

A significant component of this strategy involves increasing liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports from the United States. Officials revealed plans to source 30–33% of Taiwan’s LNG from the U.S. in 2026, up from approximately 10% previously. This shift aligns with broader efforts to reduce reliance on traditional suppliers like Qatar and Australia, which accounted for roughly one-third of imports each in 2025. The move also supports U.S. interests in expanding Alaska-based LNG projects, with Taiwan’s state-owned CPC Corp investing in infrastructure to secure long-term supply according to Reuters reports.

To further bolster resilience, the ministry emphasized diversification of energy sources. While 80% of imported LNG currently fuels power generation, Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) has reactivated 2.1 GW of coal-fired capacity at the Hsinta plant as a backup to stabilize supply during emergencies as reported by TVBS News. This measure follows heightened concerns over Middle East conflicts, which have disrupted global energy markets. The government reported no immediate disruptions to imports but highlighted contingency plans to manage long-term risks.

Despite these steps, challenges persist. Taiwan’s energy sector remains heavily dependent on imports, with over 95% of its energy sourced externally. Political and regulatory hurdles, including public opposition to renewable projects and grid constraints, continue to complicate efforts to transition to cleaner energy. However, the ministry’s focus on short-term supply security underscores its prioritization of economic stability amid volatile global conditions.
