Svitzer Orders Construction of Another Battery-Powered Tug

Svitzer, a leading global towage and marine services provider, has announced the order of another battery-powered tug, further cementing its commitment to decarbonization and sustainable operations. The new tug, based on Svitzer's innovative TRAnsverse tug design, is expected to deliver significant operational and environmental benefits compared to traditional tugboats.

The new battery-powered tug is set to operate in the Port of Gothenburg, a location that aligns with Svitzer's broader decarbonization strategy and long-term sustainability goals. The port's commitment to providing shore power charging options and bunkering methanol makes it an ideal location for the new tug's operations.

The tug, with an overall length of 34.9 meters, is designed to deliver an impressive bollard pull of 85 tonnes and utilize escort steering and braking forces rated at 150 and 200 tonnes, respectively, measured at 10 knots. Its gross tonnage of approximately 806 tonnes and 6MWh battery system will enable it to achieve speeds of up to 14 knots.



The new tug's design, in collaboration with naval architect Robert Allan Ltd, features an omnidirectional hull and propulsion system that consumes less fuel while performing versatile towage tasks. This design allows for more efficient operations than traditional tugs, with lower fuel consumption and higher steering and braking forces.

The battery-powered tug is expected to conduct more than 90% of its operations using its battery-electric powertrain, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This is particularly beneficial in the Port of Gothenburg, which aims to become the world's most sustainable port.
