Stellantis(STLA.US) said on Wednesday it would recall 44,500 hybrid crossover SUVs globally due to a potential brake pedal detachment and failure to work.

The company said the recall included some 2024-2025 Alfa Romeo Tonale plug-in hybrid SUVs and some 2024 Dodge Charger plug-in SUVs based on the same platform.

Stellantis said the recall included 21,069 vehicles in the U.S., about 2,280 in Canada, 134 in Mexico and about 20,987 outside North America.

The company said the brake pedals on some SUVs could inadvertently detach while in use. Stellantis said it was aware of 15 brake pedal assemblies breaking during normal driving, including one crash, but no injuries were reported.

Stellantis said dealers would secure the brake pedal by adding screws and nuts.

The company said owners of affected vehicles could also use the electronic parking brake to bring the vehicle to a controlled stop if brake force was lost. Stellantis said the automatic emergency braking system would intervene when detecting an impending collision, without requiring further action by the driver, unless the system was turned off.

Stellantis said it had sold 15,566 Charger and 2,737 Tonale vehicles in the U.S. as of Sept. 30.
