The furlough scheme allows Stellantis to reduce the workers' hours by up to 80% of their total contractual hours. This replaces a previous scheme that expired in August and affected around 900 workers. The agreement runs until August 31, 2026, and is intended to maintain and relaunch production of engines and a new gearbox, securing around 300 jobs.
Francesco Guida, of the Uilm union, cited a soft auto market in Europe and the long wait for new models and parts as factors contributing to the weak outlook. Additionally, the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on engines produced in Termoli and shipped to the United States have significantly impacted the plant's activity [1].
Stellantis has also assigned the production of dual-clutch transmissions for hybrid vehicles to Termoli, with production scheduled to start next year. However, the plant's future remains uncertain, as it was earmarked for the creation of one of the ACC joint venture's European electric vehicle battery-making hubs, but the plan was officially paused last year [1].
The agreement at Termoli is part of Stellantis' broader reorganization of its models at other Italian sites, including Melfi, Mirafiori, Pomigliano, and Cassino. The aim is to buy time for the future of the ACC gigafactory, whose future remains uncertain.
