Sri Lanka to assist second Iranian vessel: Disanayake

Sri Lanka is evaluating a request for assistance from a second Iranian naval vessel following the sinking of an Iranian frigate near the island nation. The vessel, currently located in Sri Lanka's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) near Colombo, is awaiting clearance to enter territorial waters. Government spokesman Nalinda Jayathissa confirmed the ship is "outside the 12-nautical-mile territorial boundary" but within the 200-nautical-mile EEZ, where international maritime law governs operations. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, also serving as Defence Minister, is leading efforts to address the situation, prioritizing "safeguarding all lives on board" and maintaining regional stability.

The incident follows the reported torpedoing of the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena by a U.S. submarine, which resulted in 84 fatalities. Sri Lankan authorities have recovered the bodies and are conducting inquests at Karapitiya Hospital, while survivors receive treatment in Galle. The second vessel's purpose remains unclear, though it may have been returning from naval exercises with India, though this has not been confirmed.

Sri Lanka's response balances legal obligations under international law with geopolitical sensitivities. The EEZ framework limits Sri Lanka's jurisdiction over military activities, but the government has emphasized its commitment to "resolve this issue" while minimizing economic and diplomatic risks. Investors may monitor regional stability, as prolonged tensions could impact trade routes and insurance costs for maritime operations in the Indian Ocean. A detailed parliamentary report is pending, which may clarify the financial and operational implications of the ongoing crisis.
