Spanish police believe Diogo Jota's car crash that killed him and his brother was caused by speeding. The investigation found marks on the vehicle's wheel suggesting excessive speed, which is over the motorway's 120km/h limit. The incident occurred on a straight stretch of road before a bend.
Spanish police have revealed that Diogo Jota, the Liverpool striker, was likely speeding when his car crashed and resulted in the deaths of him and his brother, André Silva, on July 3. The investigation, conducted by the Civil Guard, suggests that marks on the vehicle's wheel indicate excessive speed, exceeding the motorway's 120 km/h limit. The crash occurred on a straight stretch of road before a bend, where a tire burst, causing the Lamborghini to veer off course and burst into flames. The Civil Guard has stated that all tests point to Jota being the driver of the vehicle. The incident took place on an isolated section of highway in the northwestern province of Zamora.
The brothers were heading to the northern Spanish city of Santander to take a ferry to England, where Jota would rejoin Liverpool after being advised not to fly following a recent lung procedure. The siblings were laid to rest on Saturday in their native town of Gondomar, Portugal, with tributes pouring in from family, friends, and teammates.
The incident has cast a shadow over Liverpool's preseason training, which was delayed due to the tragedy. The Premier League champions are scheduled to play their first game of the summer against Preston North End on July 13, although the event's status remains uncertain.
