Southern's OpenAI deal includes 1GW of flexible demand response

Georgia Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company (NYSE: SO), has entered into a 25-year agreement with OpenAI to support a new data center project in Effingham County, Georgia. As part of the arrangement, OpenAI has committed to providing up to 1,000 megawatts (MW) of flexible demand response, allowing Georgia Power to reduce energy delivered to the facility during periods of high demand. This measure is intended to enhance grid reliability and reduce the need for additional generation resources, potentially lowering long-term costs for customers.

The project is expected to require approximately 3,200 MW of power, and OpenAI will cover the full infrastructure and electric service costs. The agreement aligns with updated regulations approved by the Georgia Public Service Commission in January 2025, which aim to balance large-energy users' needs with the interests of residential and small business customers.

Georgia Power has emphasized that the demand response component is among the largest of its kind in the U.S., reflecting a broader strategy to manage growth from data centers and other large consumers while maintaining reliability and affordability. The company has also implemented a base rate freeze and plans to provide annual savings for residential customers beginning in 2029.
