South Africa gasoline and diesel prices to fall on Sept. 3
South African consumers can anticipate a reduction in gasoline and diesel prices, effective from Wednesday, September 3. According to the Central Energy Fund (CEF), the projected decreases are likely to be significant for diesel and minor for gasoline. The CEF's month-end unaudited data indicates that diesel prices are expected to decrease by between 55 cents (500ppm) and 56 cents (50ppm). Concurrently, gasoline prices are anticipated to fall by between 4 cents (95 Unleaded) and 12 cents (93 Unleaded). If these predictions hold, a litre of 95 Unleaded petrol will cost approximately R20.76 on the coast and R21.55 in Gauteng, while 93 Unleaded will retail for around R21.39. The wholesale price of 50ppm diesel is forecasted to decline to R18.72 at the coast and R19.48 in Gauteng [1].
The primary drivers of these adjustments are international petroleum and diesel prices, with the rand playing a minor role by providing 1.5 cents of relief. International diesel prices, in particular, have fallen due to rising inventories, as reported by Bloomberg [1].
The official fuel prices for September will be announced by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy early this week. These price reductions are expected to positively impact general inflation, as transport costs significantly influence the price of goods and services. Consumer Price Inflation (CPI) rose to 3.5% in July, up from 3.0% the previous month, with diesel price hikes contributing to this increase [1].
The diesel price reductions will bring prices back to levels seen earlier in the year. The gasoline price has also shown relative stability in 2025, with 95 Unleaded currently being 4 cents cheaper than it was in January [1].
