A J.D. Power survey of 4,400 US small businesses found that 35% assess credit card surcharges, with 32% saying customers cancel purchases when they see the extra fee at checkout. The survey's limitations include not measuring the net return on investment from surcharging. The proposed settlement between Visa, Mastercard, and merchants would allow businesses to assess higher surcharges for expensive cards. Politicians and merchants are pushing to limit swipe fees, typically 2%-4% of a transaction.
