Revolutionary Guard: We will take revenge on Khamenei's killers

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Vows Retaliation Amid Geopolitical Turmoil

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has declared intentions to retaliate against those responsible for the recent strikes targeting Iran’s leadership, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The IRGC’s statement follows a wave of U.S.-Israeli military actions that struck Iranian infrastructure, including Khamenei’s compound in Tehran, leaving his status uncertain amid conflicting reports. Iranian state media and officials have not confirmed Khamenei’s death, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stating, “As far as I’m aware, the supreme leader is alive”.

The IRGC’s pledge of vengeance echoes past responses to U.S. actions, such as the 2020 assassination of Qassem Soleimani. At that time, Iran launched missile strikes on U.S. bases in Iraq, causing no casualties but signaling resolve. Analysts note that the IRGC’s current rhetoric aligns with historical patterns of asymmetric retaliation, focusing on destabilizing adversaries rather than direct confrontation.

The recent escalation has heightened regional volatility, with Iran reportedly closing the strategic Hormuz Strait to shipping, a critical global oil transit route. Such disruptions could exacerbate energy market uncertainty, already strained by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. The U.S. and Israel have justified their strikes as preemptive measures against Iranian nuclear ambitions and missile programs, but Tehran frames its actions as self-defense against aggression.

Financial markets are reacting to the turmoil, with oil prices surging on fears of supply disruptions. The U.S. military has relocated assets to safer zones, while European leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, have called for de-escalation and renewed diplomatic efforts. However, with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard emphasizing “crushing and fiery response”, the risk of prolonged conflict—and its economic repercussions—remains elevated.

Investors are advised to monitor developments in sanctions enforcement, regional trade routes, and central bank interventions as key drivers of market stability in the coming weeks.
