Red Alert Issued for Kerala's Idukki, Ernakulam, and Thrissur Districts

Kerala is expected to experience intense rainfall activity over the next few days due to an upper cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal and an east-west trough. A red alert has been issued for Idukki, Ernakulam, and Thrissur, while Pathnamthitta, Alappuzha, Palakkad, and Malappuram are on orange alert. The rest of the state is under yellow alert with isolated heavy rain possible. Strong winds are also prevailing over the region.

Kerala is bracing for intense rainfall activity over the next few days due to an upper cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal and an east-west trough. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Idukki, Ernakulam, and Thrissur districts, indicating the likelihood of extreme heavy rainfall. Pathnamthitta, Alappuzha, Palakkad, and Malappuram are under orange alert, while the rest of the state is on yellow alert, with isolated heavy rain expected. Strong winds are also prevailing over the region.

The IMD predicts that heavy rainfall (7cm to 11cm in 24 hours) to very heavy rainfall (12cm to 20cm in 24 hours) with extremely heavy rainfall ( 20cm in 24 hours) is very likely to occur at one or two places in Kerala on August 5, 2025. The Central Water Commission has also issued a yellow alert for three rivers—Muvattupuzha (Ernakulam), Achankovil (Pathanamthitta), and Thodupuhza (Idukki)—due to the chances of incessant rains.

Fishermen and coastal residents are advised to remain vigilant due to the possibility of sea incursion, as the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has warned of high tidal waves along the coastal areas of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha from 5.30 pm on Sunday to 8.30 pm on Monday. The IMD has restricted fisherfolk from venturing into the sea along Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep coasts till August 7.
