The interest in quantum computing has led to a surge in thematic ETFs. WisdomTree and Allfunds are set to become the latest firms to launch quantum computing thematic ETFs, with both filing products for regulatory approval. The Quantum Computing and Machine Learning UCITS ETF has received approval from the Central Bank of Ireland (CBI) and has registered on Allfunds’ new white-label ETF platform [1]. Meanwhile, the WisdomTree Quantum Computing UCITS ETF has also been filed for registration with the CBI.
The two filings signal competition heating up in the relatively nascent exposure, coming just months after VanEck launched the first ETF dedicated to quantum computing in May. The VanEck Quantum Computing UCITS ETF (QNTM) has seen impressive asset gathering since its launch, currently housing $92.3 million assets under management (AUM), as at 4 August [1].
However, questions over QNTM’s theme purity have emerged, with several of its top holdings generating only a small fraction of their revenue from quantum computing. The methodology states that at least 20% of the index is made up of companies directly engaged in quantum computing, while the rest can be patent holders, which means stocks such as Bank of America and Wells Fargo feature in the top ten [1].
Allfunds' quantum computing strategy will mark the second ETF to register on its white-label platform after receiving approval for a sports ETF in April. WisdomTree added quantum computing to its WisdomTree Megatrends UCITS ETF (WMGT) in April this year, with the theme delivering a 62.9% return between April 22 to July 18, which made it the second-best performer in the strategy after nuclear energy and ahead of blockchain [1].
Amazon.com's late Tuesday disclosure of a $36.7 million stake in IonQ, a quantum computing stock, has led to overnight price increases [2].
