Polycab India: Strong Financial Performance Amid Ongoing Tax Investigation
Polycab India Limited, India’s largest manufacturer of wires and cables, reported robust financial results for FY2024-25, with revenue reaching ₹2,24,083 million (a 24% year-over-year increase) and profit after tax (PAT) of ₹20,455 million (13% YoY growth) according to its annual report. The company also highlighted a 12% rise in capital expenditure (₹9,583 million) and a 15% increase in net cash reserves (₹24,572 million) as reported in its financial statements. These figures underscore the firm’s market leadership, particularly in its core wires and cables segment, which accounts for 84% of FY2025 revenue according to Screener.in data.
Despite these achievements, Polycab faces scrutiny from the income-tax (I-T) department, which conducted raids in late 2023 and uncovered unaccounted cash sales of approximately ₹1,000 crore and unrecorded purchases of over ₹400 crore. The I-T department also identified non-genuine expenses totaling ₹100 crore, including inflated transport and subcontracting costs. Polycab’s stock fell 20% following the revelations, though the company has stated it has not received formal communication from the I-T department and maintains that the investigation will not result in a "material adverse impact" on its financial position according to MoneyLife reporting.
The company’s management reiterated confidence in its long-term prospects, citing the success of its growth initiatives. Polycab surpassed its FY2025-26 sales target of ₹200 billion under Project LEAP, achieving ₹220 billion in revenue ahead of schedule and launching Project Spring for the next phase of expansion. ESG initiatives, including renewable energy adoption and sustainable sourcing, were also emphasized as key pillars of its strategy as stated in company communications.
While the I-T probe raises governance concerns, Polycab’s financial metrics and strategic momentum suggest resilience. Investors are advised to monitor regulatory developments closely, as the outcome of the investigation could influence market sentiment in the near term.
