PNC Stock Slides to 275th in Volume Amid Record Optimism and Inflation Fears

A recent survey by PNC revealed record-high optimism among small and mid-sized U.S. business owners, with 84% expressing confidence in their business prospects, up from 78% in spring and 76% in the previous fall. Despite this optimism, 46% cited inflation as their top concern for the next six months, while 51% anticipate supplier price hikes during the same period. The survey also highlighted growing supply chain challenges, with 48% of businesses currently facing disruptions and 51% preparing for further cost increases.

PNC’s Chief Economist Gus Faucher noted that while the U.S. economy enters autumn with strong fundamentals—such as near-record stock prices and steady job growth—risks remain elevated. These include tariffs, high interest rates, and weaker employment growth. PNC forecasts slower economic expansion over the next year, accompanied by higher inflation, with potential relief as the Federal Reserve begins rate cuts later this year.

The survey further indicated a decline in profit expectations, with only 48% of business owners anticipating higher profits in the next six months, down from 57% in previous periods. Non-labor costs, such as supply chain expenses, are increasingly driving price increases, with 54% of respondents attributing customer price hikes to these factors. Cash flow concerns also rose, as 23% of businesses expect reduced cash reserves by next year, up from 17% a year ago.

Backtesting results show that during periods of heightened inflation concerns and mixed profit expectations, PNC’s stock historically underperforms relative to broader market indices, particularly in the absence of clear policy interventions to stabilize costs.
