Santander UK has announced the appointment of Enrique Alvarez Labiano as an Executive Director to the Boards of Santander UK plc and Santander UK Group Holdings plc. His role will take immediate effect upon regulatory approval for his position on the Santander UK plc board. Labiano, currently CEO of Retail and Business Banking, brings over two decades of experience across international markets and within the Santander Group.

Labiano joined Santander in 2015 as Group Head of Strategy and later held roles including Head of Strategy and Corporate Development in the UK (2019), Chief People Officer (2020), and Head of Everyday Banking (2021). His leadership has focused on digital transformation and customer-centric strategies, aligning with Santander UK’s broader operational goals.

William Vereker, Santander UK Chair, emphasized Labiano’s extensive experience, stating, “He brings us over 20 years of international business experience from a range of blue-chip companies and the wider Santander Group” as per the official announcement. The appointment reflects the bank’s strategy to strengthen leadership amid evolving market dynamics.

Santander UK, a major UK financial services provider, serves 14 million active customers, including 7 million digital users, through 444 branches and online platforms. The bank employs approximately 19,600 staff and operates under the supervision of the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA). Customer deposits are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS).

As part of Banco Santander, the UK subsidiary benefits from the parent group’s global scale and diversified business model, which includes Retail & Commercial Banking, Wealth Management, and Corporate & Investment Banking. Banco Santander, headquartered in Spain, reported €1.3 trillion in total funds as of Q1 2024 and aims to expand its open financial services platform.
