Openvibe Expands Functionality to Include RSS News Feeds

Openvibe, an app that combines news and social media, is expanding its functionality to include RSS support for tracking news sites and blogs. The addition makes Openvibe more useful for keeping up with interests and important information without switching between multiple newsreaders or social networking apps. Openvibe CEO Matej Svancer says RSS support was always part of the app's roadmap, but the feature was heavily requested by the user base. Users can add RSS sources one by one, check suggested sites, or import an OPML file. Once added, RSS updates can be tracked in the app's combined home feed, dedicated "RSS" feed, or custom feed.

Openvibe, a social media aggregator that combines various open networks like Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads, and Nostr, has announced the addition of RSS support in its latest update. This feature allows users to follow news sites and blogs, making it easier to stay informed without switching between multiple newsreaders or social networking apps.

The update, which is now available on both iOS and Android platforms, introduces several enhancements. Users can add RSS sources individually, import their existing subscriptions via OPML files, or follow suggested sites within the app. Once added, RSS updates can be tracked in the combined home feed, a dedicated "RSS" feed, or a custom feed tailored to the user's preferences.

Openvibe CEO Matej Svancer highlighted that RSS support was part of the app's longer-term roadmap but was prioritized due to high user demand [2]. The addition places Openvibe in direct competition with other content aggregators, such as Tapestry, Feeeed, and Surf, which also offer RSS tracking capabilities.

The new feature opens content directly within the app, providing a clean, distraction-free reading experience. Users can also choose to visit the websites in a browser if they prefer. Additionally, the app offers a "Performance Mode" toggle to reduce resource usage by turning off image loading in timeline previews.

Openvibe has been testing the RSS feature with a small group of users, who collectively added over 4,000 feeds. The app remains free to download without in-app purchases, but the company plans to introduce a subscription offering in the future.

The startup is backed by a small amount of funding from Czech Founders VC, Tensor Ventures, and Automattic, the parent company to WordPress.com, Tumblr, Beeper, and others [2].
