Omani Foreign Ministry: US and Israeli military operations against Iran are inconsistent with international law
Omani Foreign Ministry Condemns US-Israeli Strikes on Iran, Citing International Law Violations
The Sultanate of Oman has strongly condemned the recent U.S. and Israeli military operations against Iran, asserting that the actions violate the United Nations Charter and principles of international law. In a statement, the Omani Foreign Ministry described the strikes as a "dangerous and reckless escalation" that undermines regional stability and obstructs diplomatic efforts to resolve tensions over Iran's nuclear program according to the ministry. The attacks, which targeted sovereign Iranian facilities and caused casualties, were labeled "unacceptable aggressive behavior" that jeopardizes peace in the Middle East as the ministry stated.
Oman's criticism comes amid ongoing negotiations between Iran and the United States to revive nuclear talks, which had shown recent progress. The Omani government emphasized that the timing of the strikes "clearly reveals a deliberate intent to obstruct the diplomatic process" and risk a broader conflict with global repercussions according to Omani officials. Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi echoed these concerns on social media, expressing dismay over the attacks and urging the U.S. to avoid further escalation. "Neither the interests of the United States nor the cause of global peace are well served by this," he wrote, adding, "This is not your war" as reported by Al Jazeera.
The U.S. and Israel have justified the strikes as a preemptive response to Iran's alleged nuclear ambitions and regional threats. However, international legal experts have questioned the legitimacy of such actions under the UN Charter, which permits military force only in self-defense or with Security Council approval. Critics argue that anticipatory strikes lack sufficient evidence of an imminent threat and risk normalizing aggression over diplomacy according to legal analysis.
Oman reiterated its longstanding position that security must be achieved through dialogue, not force. The statement called on the international community to reject the current approach and prioritize peaceful resolutions that respect state sovereignty as the ministry stated. With tensions escalating and retaliatory threats emerging, the Gulf nation's mediation role remains critical as it seeks to prevent further destabilization in an already volatile region.
