Norway Progress Party leader Sylvi Listhaug speaks to media
Norway's election is set to shape the country's political landscape, with the Progress Party (Frp) leader Sylvi Listhaug playing a significant role. In an interview with media outlets, Listhaug discussed her party's campaign and policy positions, which have gained traction among younger voters.Listhaug emphasized the importance of the wealth tax, stating that her party aims to scrap it entirely. She argues that the tax disproportionately affects the wealthy and does not contribute to Norway's economic growth. "The wealth tax is outdated and ineffective. It's time for Norway to adopt a more progressive tax system that benefits all citizens," she said [2].
The Progress Party has been bolstered by an energetic social media campaign, driven by youthful influencers who have inspired younger voters against the wealth tax. Listhaug acknowledged the role of social media in her party's success, stating, "We've been able to reach a wider audience, especially among younger voters, through social media. It's a powerful tool for communicating our message."
Listhaug also touched on immigration policy, stating that her party advocates for stricter controls and a reduction in the number of immigrants entering Norway. "We believe that Norway should have more control over its borders and that immigration should be managed in a way that benefits Norwegian citizens," she said.
The election is expected to be close-fought, with the Labour Party of Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre narrowly favoured to stay in power. However, the Progress Party's surge in support could make it a key player in coalition negotiations. Listhaug acknowledged the potential for her party to form a coalition with other right-wing parties, stating, "We're open to forming a coalition with other parties that share our vision for Norway's future."
Despite the challenges faced by the Labour Party, including high inflation and interest rates, Prime Minister Støre remains confident in his party's ability to retain power. "We have a strong platform and a clear vision for Norway's future. We're confident that we'll be able to form a government and continue to lead the country," he said [1].
The election results are expected to be announced on Tuesday, followed by weeks of negotiations to form a coalition and agree on Cabinet positions. The outcome of the election will have implications for Norway's domestic policy, but it is unlikely to significantly impact its foreign policy, given the country's strong support for NATO and Ukraine's defense against Russia.
