NDA Candidates Elected Unopposed to Rajya Sabha from Assam

Purkayastha, son of veteran BJP leader and former union minister Kabindra Purkayastha, hails from Silchar and is currently the BJP's state unit secretary. Baishya, a former union minister and veteran AGP leader, has previously served a term in the Lok Sabha and will be a member of the Rajya Sabha for the third time. The elections to two Rajya Sabha seats in Assam were necessitated with the terms of Baishya and BJP's Ranjan Das ending on June 14.

Assam has seven seats in the Rajya Sabha, with four held by the BJP, one each by its allies AGP and UPPL, and one represented by an independent MP. The victory of Purkayastha and Baishya further strengthens the NDA's hold in the Upper House, with four seats now under the BJP and one each under AGP and UPPL.
