Minnesota Governor TimTIMB-- Walz announced that former state House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were fatally shot in a politically motivated assassination. Additionally, state Sen. John Hoffman, a Democrat, and his wife were shot and injured in the same incident. Walz, addressing the public at a press conference, emphasized the need to stand against all forms of political violence and assured that those responsible would be held accountable.

Hoffman, who was first elected in 2012, is the owner of Hoffman Strategic Advisors, a consulting firm. He previously served as the vice chair of the Anoka Hennepin School Board, which oversees the largest school district in Minnesota. Hoffman is married and has one daughter. Hortman, the top House Democratic leader in the state Legislature and a former House speaker, was first elected in 2004. Both Hoffman and Hortman represented districts located north of Minneapolis.

Drew Evans, superintendent of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, stated that authorities were actively searching for a suspect. Officials reported that the suspect was dressed as a law enforcement officer, exploiting the trust associated with the uniform. This betrayal was described as deeply disturbing by Public Safety Commissioner Bob Johnson, who emphasized the honor and responsibility that comes with wearing the badge.

The shootings occurred during a period of heightened political tensions, with leaders across the nation facing attacks, harassment, and intimidation. The incident has sparked concerns about the safety of public servants and the broader implications for American democracy. The national gun violence prevention organization, led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released a statement expressing horror and heartbreak over the attack. Giffords, who was shot in the head in 2011 by a gunman who killed six people and injured 12 others, stepped down from Congress in January 2012 to focus on her recovery. She condemned the violent extremism that threatens the foundations of the country and called on leaders to speak out against such acts.
