Metaplanet Surpasses El Salvador With 1,241 BTC Purchase
Metaplanet, a Tokyo-listed investment firm, has significantly expanded its Bitcoin holdings, surpassing the reserves of ElEL-- Salvador, a country renowned for its embrace of cryptocurrency. The company added 1,241 BTC to its treasury, valued at approximately $129 million at current market prices. This acquisition brings Metaplanet's total Bitcoin holdings to 6,796 BTC, surpassing El Salvador's 6,174 BTC by 622 BTC. The average price of Metaplanet's Bitcoin holdings is around $91,000 per token, with the latest purchase priced at approximately $102,000 per token. The company's treasury is now valued at around $707 million, making it the largest public company holding Bitcoin in Asia and the 11th largest worldwide.
Simon Gerovich, CEO of Metaplanet, announced the news on X, highlighting the company's competitive stance against nation-states in Bitcoin accumulation. The latest acquisition is the largest purchase to date for Metaplanet, which commenced its Bitcoin treasury in April 2024. The company aims to hold 10,000 BTC by the end of 2025, with the latest acquisition bringing it closer to this goal. Metaplanet's Bitcoin accumulation strategy has been financed through the issuance of company bonds to the public, with 14 bond offerings to date, including a recent $21.25 million bond sale.
Metaplanet has also reached out to US investors, raising $250 million intended for a US audience. The company plans to establish its US headquarters in Miami, Florida, citing the region's supportive policies for the crypto industry and its numerous crypto startups. Metaplanet envisions Miami as a center of Bitcoin innovation and blockchain technological research, aligning with its capital formation strategy and Bitcoin accumulation roadmap beyond 2025.
Metaplanet's commitment to Bitcoin investment is evident in its BTC Yield Key Performance Indicator (KPI), which measures Bitcoin accumulation per share. The KPIKSPI-- stood at 38% in Q2, with previous highs of 95.6% in Q1 2025 and 309.8% in Q4 2024. The company's investment of around $600 million in Bitcoin, now worth around $700 million, reflects a profit of roughly 16%. The BTC Yield KPI is 170% Year to Date (YTD) as of 2025, providing shareholders with a metric to track the value added to their shares through the Bitcoin accumulation strategy. Metaplanet's stock increased by 3.8% on the Tokyo stock exchange, trading under the ticker symbol 3350.T.
