Metaplanet Boosts Bitcoin Holdings to $196.3M, Eyes Global Expansion
Metaplanet, a Japanese investment firm, has bolstered its Bitcoin holdings with a recent purchase of 156 BTC worth $13.4 million, bringing its total to 2,391 BTC. The company acquired the Bitcoin at an average rate of $85,890 per BTC, continuing its aggressive accumulation strategy. Since adopting its Bitcoin strategy in April 2024, Metaplanet's portfolio has grown to $196.3 million, with an average cost basis of $82,100 per BTC.
The latest acquisition has already yielded a 31.8 percent BTC yield for Metaplanet in 2025, balancing the ratio of Bitcoin accumulation against share dilution. In Q4 2024, the firm posted a BTC yield of 309.8 percent. Metaplanet's share price surged 21.15 percent on Monday to 4,010 yen, reflecting the overall crypto market rally and the firm's strong performance.
Metaplanet has financed its Bitcoin acquisitions through bond issuances. In February, it issued 4 billion yen ($26.4 million) worth of zero-coupon bonds to EVO FUND, redeeming 2 billion yen early on February 19 and settling the rest on February 21. A further 2 billion yen bond issue was executed on February 27, expiring on August 26, 2025.
CEO Simon Gerovich revealed that both the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq have approached Metaplanet, signaling its global expansion intentions. The business is exploring opportunities to float its shares onto more overseas investors, following the path of MicroStrategyMSTR-- in using Bitcoin as an asset within company treasuries.
Corporate acceptance of Bitcoin continues to grow, with 78 companies worldwide now holding Bitcoin in their treasuries, according to crypto security firm Coinkite. Institutional interest in Bitcoin has been building momentum, helped by the introduction of Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs). BOB co-founder Dom Harz suggests that companies may potentially integrate Bitcoin into their core business activities.
Metaplanet remains committed to its long-term Bitcoin accumulation strategy, aiming to hold 10,000 BTC by 202
