MetaMask, a leading self-custodial crypto wallet for the Ethereum network, has announced significant updates to enhance user experience and expand its capabilities. The changes, revealed at ETHDenver, North America's largest Ethereum conference, include smart contract capabilities, batched transactions, and the launch of a US debit card.

The update introduces smart contract capabilities to MetaMask's current wallet structureGPCR--, marking a shift from the existing Externally Owned Account (EOA) system. The new Contract Account (CA) system offers enhanced security features, including recovery mechanisms and additional transaction verification steps. This addresses the vulnerability of EOA wallets to human error, where users can permanently lose access to their crypto holdings if they lose their private keys.

MetaMask's team explained the benefits of smart-contract-based accounts in a detailed blog post. The update also includes ERC-5792, a feature that enables batched transactions. Users can now combine multiple steps into a single action, such as "approve + swap," reducing time and lowering gas fees.

The company also announced the expansion of its debit card service to select US states, scheduled for mid-March 2025. The debit card connects directly to users' MetaMask wallets, allowing for spending crypto at any location that accepts MastercardMA--. Users can earn staking rewards while keeping their funds available for spending. The card has already been operating successfully in the UK and EU markets.

In a move toward multi-chain support, MetaMask will add Bitcoin and Solana compatibility, allowing users to manage different cryptocurrencies in one wallet. The platform's new features aim to reduce complexity in cryptocurrency management, making crypto more accessible to users.

MetaMask released these announcements through multiple channels, including their official blog and during the ETHDenver conference. The updates focus on improving user experience and expanding the wallet's capabilities, positioning MetaMask as a leading choice for self-custodial crypto wallets.
