Meta's AI Gambit: Challenging ChatGPT with a Standalone App

Meta Platforms announced the launch of a standalone AI application, Meta AI, on Tuesday, directly challenging OpenAI's ChatGPT. This development confirms earlier reports from February, suggesting Meta's significant step toward AI commercialization following the introduction of their open-source language model, Llama.

The launch of Meta AI is part of a broader trend among tech giants. Companies like Google and Elon Musk's xAI have recently revealed their own independent applications, Gemini and Grok, respectively. This movement marks a shift in focus as companies take AI assistants out of search bars and social media platforms to create dedicated entry points for users.

Meta's Chief Financial Officer, Susan Li, previously revealed that Meta AI's monthly active users had increased from 600 million last December to 700 million by January. This user base surpasses the latest reported weekly active user count of 100 million for ChatGPT.
