US may meet wednesday with Ukraine and European allies on peace plan.
The United States is set to convene a meeting with Ukraine and European allies on Wednesday to discuss a peace plan aimed at ending the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This high-level meeting, scheduled to take place in Paris, will bring together key officials from the US, Ukraine, and several European nations, including France, Britain, and Germany. The meeting is part of ongoing efforts to broker a ceasefire and achieve a lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine. According to Bloomberg News, the US has proposed a plan that includes an end to hostilities and a rollback of sanctions on Russia [1]. The proposal, however, is not considered a final settlement and would not recognize Russia-controlled territories of Ukraine as under Moscow's rule [1].
The meeting in Paris follows a series of talks between US envoy Steve Witkoff and Ukrainian officials, as well as discussions with European counterparts. Witkoff has previously met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and has suggested that any peace deal could center on the status of Ukraine's occupied territories [2]. Ukrainian officials have expressed concern about the potential for these talks to disrupt and dislodge pro-Russian narratives [2].
Despite the ongoing diplomatic efforts, the conflict continues to escalate. Russia has ramped up its strikes on Ukraine, with recent attacks killing dozens of people, including children, in Ukrainian cities [3]. The increased pressure has led to a growing consensus among European allies that new diplomatic efforts are needed to end the conflict.
The meeting in Paris is seen as a significant step towards involving European allies in the peace process. French President Emmanuel Macron's office described the talks as launching a "positive process" and praised the US framework for peace [3]. The US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also expressed optimism about the potential for peace, noting that the encouraging reception in Paris shows that peace is possible if all parties commit to reaching an agreement [3].
The meeting will be followed by another gathering of envoys from the US, France, Britain, Germany, and Ukraine next week in London. This will provide an opportunity to continue discussions and work towards a more comprehensive peace plan.
