MedStar Health's Helicopter Unit Changes Protocols After Collision Warnings Exposed

MedStar Health's helicopter company, operated by Metro Aviation, changed its protocols after a Washington Post report revealed it had triggered collision warnings on airliners near Reagan National Airport. The company now requires pilots to communicate with air traffic control before lifting off from Georgetown University Hospital's rooftop helipad, following a midair collision between an Army Black Hawk and an American Airlines jet in January. The NTSB investigation found that there were more than 100 cockpit warnings about nearby helicopters in the decade before the crash.
