Manipur MLAs urge Amit Shah to form "popular government" to ensure peace and normalcy in the state.

Twenty-one MLAs in Manipur have written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting the formation of a "popular government" to ensure peace and normalcy in the state. The MLAs, representing BJP, NPP, NPF, and independents, cited the imposition of President's rule in February 2023 following ethnic violence between Meiteis and Kuki tribes. They asked for the installation of a popular government to prevent further violence and ensure democratic governance.

Twenty-one Manipur MLAs, representing various political parties including the BJP, NPP, NPF, and independents, have written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting the formation of a "popular government" to ensure peace and normalcy in the state. The MLAs cited the imposition of President's rule in February 2023 following ethnic violence between Meiteis and Kuki tribes. The letter, submitted on Tuesday, expressed concern over the growing unrest and the lack of visible actions to restore peace and normalcy since the imposition of President's rule. The MLAs highlighted that several civil society organizations have been opposing the current rule and demanding the formation of a popular government. They assured their full dedication and commitment to restoring peace if a popular government is reinstated [1].

The MLAs also mentioned that they have the support of 32 MLAs, including the 10 Kuki-Zo MLAs from the state. They stated that if no positive response comes from Delhi, they may stake a claim to form the government after May 15 [1].

In February, the Centre imposed President's rule in Manipur following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. The imposition of President's rule was largely due to pressure from unhappy BJP colleagues from the Manipur valley. Since the outbreak of violence in 2023, over 250 people have been killed, more than 60,000 displaced, and approximately 80,000 security personnel have been deployed across Manipur [1].

The MLAs also mentioned that the situation has not improved under President's rule and that there has been no progress towards a political dialogue between the communities. They called for a new government to facilitate talks and disarmament [2].

In response to the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack, Home Minister Amit Shah has directed all state Chief Ministers to ensure the deportation of Pakistani nationals staying beyond the stipulated deadline. This directive follows India's revocation of visas issued to Pakistani citizens and an advisory for Indian nationals in Pakistan to return home promptly [3].
