Malaysia to Investigate Jho Low's Alleged Residency in China

Malaysia is investigating a claim that fugitive Jho Low, wanted in connection with the multibillion-dollar collapse of state fund 1MDB, is living in China. Low, also known as Constantinos Achilles Veis, is accused of stealing $1.42 billion from three bond transactions arranged by Goldman Sachs. He has been charged with money laundering in Malaysia and is wanted by the FBI.

Malaysia is looking into reports that fugitive financier Jho Low, wanted in connection with the collapse of state fund 1MDB, is residing in China. The country has not received any official information on Low's whereabouts, with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stating that he would need to verify the claims with the home ministry [1].

Investigative reporters Bradley Hope and Tom Wright, whose work exposed the 1MDB scandal, recently claimed that Low is living in Shanghai's Green Hills district under the name Constantinos Achilles Veis. They also reported that Low is using a forged Australian passport with this alias [2].

The claims come as Malaysia has been attempting to repatriate Low since 2018, when he was charged with money laundering in absentia. Low has previously been reported as hiding in Macau and has publicly maintained his innocence. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has accused him of stealing $1.42 billion from three bond transactions arranged by Goldman Sachs Group Inc. [1].

Malaysia's former prime minister Najib Razak is currently in prison for his role in the 1MDB scandal, which saw approximately $4.5 billion misappropriated. Low, who previously said he was involved in consulting work for the fund, has been portrayed as the mastermind behind the scheme [1].

The US Department of Justice settled with Low in 2019 to recover around $1 billion stolen from 1MDB, but American authorities still consider him wanted for his role in the affair. Malaysian and Singaporean authorities are also continuing to pursue Low [2].
