US layoffs surged in January to 108,435, a 118% YoY increase, according to Challenger, Gray and Christmas. The top reasons cited for layoffs were losing a commercial contract, stock market and economic conditions, and restructuring. Amazon cut 16,000 jobs, and UPS plans to slash its workforce by 30,000 this year. Layoffs in the transportation, technology, healthcare, chemical, and media sectors were the highest. Experts question the role of AI in layoffs, with some attributing job cuts to its adoption.
