The AFL-CIO, the union of unions, just got a massive boost with the addition of two million brothers and sisters from the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). This merger, announced in January 2025, raises the AFL-CIO’s total membership to nearly 15 million workers. This is a game-changer, folks! With a politicized Congress stalling pro-worker legislation and an anti-union President returning to the White House, the timing couldn’t be better. This partnership is ready to fight for worker protections, fair wages, expanded benefits, safety standards, and the right to organize.

SEIU President April Verrett said it best: “SEIU members are ready to unleash a new era of worker power, as millions of service and care workers unite with workers at the AFL-CIO to build our unions in every industry and every ZIP code.” This is a call to arms, folks! The labor movement is ready to stand up to union-busters at corporations and in government and rewrite the outdated, sexist, racist labor laws that hold us all back.

AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler echoed this sentiment, saying, “We always say ‘stronger together,’” and this merger is proof of that. “This is an incredible time for us to be amassing our power, uniting and building our muscle together and really showing the power of solidarity. Because we want to make sure that workers continue to have their voices heard as we are about to enter into this new administration.”

But the fight isn’t over yet. Amazon’s Whole Foods workers in Philadelphia just became the first unionized store in Amazon’s grocery chain, organizing with the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union Local 1776. But Whole Foods isn’t playing ball. They’ve filed objections with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), alleging coercion and intimidation on the part of organizers. This is a classic stall tactic, folks! Whole Foods is trying to delay negotiations and force the union to spend more money, all while risking a decertification vote if a contract isn’t reached in the first 1-2 years.

UFCW Local 1776 President Wendell Young, IV had this to say: “We are incredibly proud of the workers who have stood up to Amazon and demonstrated the strength of solidarity. We are ready to bring Whole Foods to the bargaining table to negotiate a fair first contract that reflects the workers’ needs and priorities.” But Whole Foods isn’t budging. They’re playing dirty, folks! And we can’t let them get away with it.

But the labor movement isn’t backing down. Federal worker unions have united to protect members who have been wrongfully terminated by the Trump administration. The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), along with other unions, have filed legal action to combat what they say are retaliatory attacks on the rights of American workers. AFGE President Everett Kelley said, “AFGE will not stand idly by as a secretive group of ultra-wealthy individuals with major conflicts of interest attempt to deregulate themselves and give their own companies sweetheart government contracts while firing civil servants and dismantling the institutions designed to serve the American people.”

This is a fight for fairness, accountability, and the integrity of our government. Federal employees are not the problem—they are the solution. They deserve to have their voices heard in decisions that affect their work, their agencies, and the public they serve.
