KMRL introduces UPI-enabled ticket vending machines at all metro stations along the Aluva-Thripunithura corridor to offer a faster and more user-friendly ticketing experience. The system allows commuters to purchase tickets instantly by scanning a QR code and making a payment via any UPI-enabled mobile application. This move is part of KMRL's initiative to reduce dependency on cash transactions and transition to a completely digital ticketing system.

Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has introduced UPI-based payments at ticket vending machines in all stations along the Aluva–Thripunithura metro corridor. This initiative, aimed at offering a faster and more user-friendly ticketing experience, was inaugurated on August 4, 2023, by Transport Commissioner Nagaraju C. at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium station [1].

The new system allows commuters to purchase tickets instantly by scanning a QR code and making a payment via any UPI-enabled mobile application. This eliminates the need for physical cash or card transactions, reduces waiting time at counters, and ensures a smooth, contactless, and secure payment process. The digital tickets are currently available on the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) platform through a wide range of popular applications, including Paytm, PhonePe, redBus, Tummoc, Yatri, EaseMyTrip, Rapido, Telegram (My Metro Kochi), and Kerala Savaari [1].

KMRL's Managing Director, Loknath Behera, emphasized that this move is part of a series of initiatives aimed at making ticket booking faster and more convenient for passengers. He noted that only a few metro systems in the country have integrated UPI with vending machines, and Kochi Metro is proud to be one among them. The ultimate goal is to transition to a completely digital ticketing system [1].

The introduction of UPI-based payments is expected to decongest ticket counters, especially during peak hours, and offer commuters a quicker alternative to access metro services. This initiative is part of a broader trend in digital payments, which is gaining traction globally. For instance, cross-border QR code payments between Singapore and Malaysia allow customers of certain financial institutions to make retail payments by scanning their Nets QR code or DuitNow QR codes [2].

The Regional Payment Connectivity initiative, launched by Asean in 2022, aims to enable fast, seamless, and more affordable cross-border payments in local currencies through standardized and interoperable QR codes. This initiative has seen significant progress, with Vietnam, Laos, Brunei, and Cambodia joining the initial five member states [2].

KMRL's digital ticketing system aligns with these regional trends, offering a more efficient and user-friendly experience for commuters. As the region continues to advance in digital payments, the use of local currencies for cross-border transactions is expected to increase, potentially mitigating reliance on foreign currencies [2].
