A Khadi Loom outlet has been inaugurated in Bailhongal, Karnataka, in collaboration with Karnataka Khadi Gramodyog Samyukta Sangha. The MLC, Channaraj Hattiholi, urged people to buy Khadi cloth to strengthen the village economy and realize Mahatma Gandhi's dream of Gram Swaraj. The outlet sells handwoven Khadi and silk cloth and other materials.

The picturesque village of Bailhongal in Karnataka recently witnessed the inauguration of a new Khadi Loom outlet [1]. This initiative was taken in collaboration with the Karnataka Khadi Gramodyog Samyukta Sangha, with the aim of promoting the use of locally handwoven Khadi cloth and strengthening the village economy.

The MLC of Karnataka, Channaraj Hattiholi, emphasized the importance of buying Khadi cloth during the inauguration ceremony [2]. He urged the people to support this cause, as it not only helps in realizing Mahatma Gandhi's dream of Gram Swaraj but also provides employment opportunities for local artisans.

Khadi, a fabric that is hand-woven on traditional Indian looms using locally handspun yarn, has been an integral part of India's textile industry for centuries [3]. It is defined as any cloth woven from cotton, silk, or woolen yarn handspun in India or a combination of these yarns. The Khadi sector has been creating employment opportunities for spinners, weavers, and other allied artisans, with a significant number of women artisans involved in the spinning process [3].

The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has been instrumental in promoting Khadi activities in India. KVIC is supported by 30 State Khadi & Village Industry Boards (KVIBs), 2000 khadi institutions affiliated to KVIC and State KVIBs, 7050 sales outlets of khadi bhandars/bhawans, and an extensive network of 250 training centers [3].

The employment generation potential of the Khadi sector has been a subject of interest for researchers. A study conducted by Pesala Busenna and A. Amarender Reddy assessed the capabilities of 200 khadi institutions in India and projected their requirement in terms of spinning and weaving infrastructure, upgradation of skills of artisans, and supervisory workers [4]. The study highlighted the importance of promoting Khadi activities to create employment opportunities and strengthen rural economies.

In conclusion, the inauguration of the new Khadi Loom outlet in Bailhongal is a significant step towards promoting the use of locally handwoven Khadi cloth, strengthening the village economy, and providing employment opportunities for local artisans. With the support of initiatives like these and the continued efforts of organizations like KVIC, the Khadi sector in India is poised to make a significant contribution to the country's economy and society.
