Kerala Monsoon Alert: Heavy Rain Expected in Two Districts on Sunday

Monsoon activity in Kerala surged in the past two days, with most districts experiencing moderate-heavy rain spells and gusty winds. On Sunday, the northern and central parts of Kerala are expected to receive heavy rain, with red alerts issued for Kannur and Kasaragod, and orange alerts for Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram, Thrissur, Palakkad, Ernakulam, and Idukki. Rain is expected to subside slightly after Sunday, but the monsoon is likely to gain strength with a fresh low-pressure area forming over the Bay of Bengal on July 24.

The monsoon activity in Kerala has surged in recent days, with most districts experiencing moderate to heavy rain spells and gusty winds. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon is expected to intensify further, with the northern and central parts of Kerala anticipated to receive heavy rain on Sunday.

The IMD has issued red alerts for Kannur and Kasaragod, indicating extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm within 24 hours. Orange alerts have been sounded for Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram, Thrissur, Palakkad, Ernakulam, and Idukki, indicating very heavy rainfall ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm within 24 hours [1].

Strong winds with speeds reaching up to 40-50 kmph are also expected in isolated places across the state from July 19 to July 22. The IMD has advised residents in affected areas to take immediate action and relocate to safe areas. Additionally, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has sounded a high wave alert along the coasts of Kerala, restricting beach-based tourism activities and advising coastal residents to move to safe locations [1].

The monsoon is expected to subside slightly after Sunday, but a fresh low-pressure area is anticipated to form over the Bay of Bengal on July 24, which could bring renewed heavy rainfall to the state.
