Keith H. Johnson, a quantum physicist and MIT Professor Emeritus, died at 89. He pioneered the use of theoretical methods in materials science and made significant contributions to the understanding of materials before they were made in a lab. Johnson's approach gave scientists deeper insight into materials and laid the groundwork for today's computer-driven methods of materials discovery. He also explored independent filmmaking, writing, producing, and directing the sci-fi thriller "Breaking Symmetry," which has been viewed over 4 million times on YouTube.
