Japan PM Vows to Lower Rice Prices, Secure LDP Majority in July Election
In a recent press conference, the Japanese Prime Minister expressed his determination to secure an overall majority for the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its coalition partner, the Komeito Party, in the upcoming July House of Councillors election. The Prime Minister emphasized that the primary concern of voters is the cost of living, and he pledged to make every effort to lower rice prices and ensure a stable energy supply amidst the tense situation in the Middle East.
The Prime Minister also stated that forming alliances with parties other than the Komeito Party on individual issues is not feasible. He stressed the importance of reaching a consensus on broad policy issues for successful alliances. Regarding the ongoing trade negotiations with the United States, the Prime Minister asserted that the final decision will be made by the President, and he will continue to push for negotiations with the utmost effort. He also emphasized that national interests should not be compromised for the sake of a quick agreement.
In response to the U.S. actions against Iran, the Prime Minister noted that these actions demonstrate the U.S.'s resolve to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons while also seeking to quickly resolve regional tensions. He highlighted the interconnected nature of the situations in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Additionally, Japan denied that the U.S. had requested an increase in Japan's defense spending to 3.5% of its GDP.
