JAMB CAPS Streamlines Nigerian Tertiary Admissions
JAMB CAPS, or the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board’s Central Admissions Processing System, is an online platform developed to streamline and manage the admission process into tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Introduced during the 2017/2018 session and fully implemented in the 2018/2019 admission exercise, JAMB CAPS aims to automate the admission process, empower candidates with information on their choice of institutions and courses, eliminate multiple admissions, ensure fair selection, and restore tertiary institutions’ autonomy in admission management. The system serves as a marketplace where the board, tertiary institutions, and candidates coordinate, monitor, and regulate the admission process. Candidates can track their admission status, accept or reject offers, and manage their admission information. Institutions can recommend candidates and monitor the admission process, while JAMB oversees the entire process to ensure fairness and transparency.
JAMB CAPS offers several features to guide candidates through the admission process. These include the ability to upload O’Level results directly onto the platform, verify biodata on the profile page, monitor admission status, accept or reject admission offers, and approve course transfers if institutions offer a different course than initially applied for. The system works in conjunction with tertiary institutions to facilitate the admission process. After the release of UTME results, JAMB sends each candidate’s information and result to their respective institution of choice. Institutions then set their cut-off marks and verify candidates who meet these criteria, providing them access to apply for post-UTME screening. Candidates are expected to upload their O’Level results for verification and track their admission status on JAMB CAPS, which will display ‘Admitted’, ‘Not Admitted’, or ‘Admission in Progress.’ Candidates can then accept or reject the admission offer through the platform.
If a candidate accepts the admission, their name is submitted to the institution, and they are required to print the admission letter. If a candidate rejects the admission, they remain open to being granted admission by other institutions that are still sorting out for students. These institutions typically select candidates based on UTME score, choice of program, and the State or Local Government Area. Accessing JAMB CAPS is best done using a PC, laptop, or tablet due to the requirement for desktop mode view. Candidates can log in to the JAMB E-facility portal, supply their email address and password, and navigate to the ‘Check Admission Status’ section. They can then select the examination year, provide their JAMB registration number, and access their CAPS profile to view their admission status. Uploading O’Level results on the portal is essential for course verification by the institution of choice. Candidates can navigate to their JAMB CAPS profile, select ‘Upload O’Level Result,’ enter their results, and submit them for verification.
JAMB CAPS plays a crucial role in the tertiary institution admission process in Nigeria. By providing a centralized platform for managing admissions, it ensures transparency, fairness, and efficiency. Candidates are empowered to track their admission status and make informed decisions about their educational choices. Institutions benefit from a streamlined process that allows them to recommend candidates and monitor the admission process effectively. JAMB’s oversight ensures that the entire process is conducted with integrity, eliminating multiple admissions and restoring autonomy to tertiary institutions. The system’s features, such as O’Level result upload, profile verification, and admission status monitoring, make it a comprehensive tool for navigating the admission process. Overall, JAMB CAPS represents a significant advancement in the management of tertiary institution admissions in Nigeria, benefiting candidates, institutions, and the examination board alike.
