Israeli military: No findings related to Arad were located at search site

Israeli military forces conducted an operation in eastern Lebanon on March 6-7, 2026, to search for the remains of Ron Arad, an Israeli Air Force navigator declared missing in action in 1986, but no findings were located at the site, according to an IDF statement. The operation, carried out by special forces near the Syria-Lebanon border, was part of ongoing efforts to recover information about Arad's fate. The IDF emphasized that there were no casualties during the mission, refuting claims by Hezbollah about Israeli military losses.

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett previously disclosed a Mossad-led operation in October 2021 aimed at gathering intelligence on Arad's whereabouts, describing it as a "complex, wide-ranging and daring" mission. However, defense sources reported the operation failed to yield new information, while the Prime Minister's Office characterized it as a success meeting exceptional operational objectives. Bennett cited the Jewish value of redeeming captives as motivation for the efforts, though no concrete results have been confirmed.

Since Arad's capture by Lebanese Shi'ite group Amal in 1986, Israel has invested significant resources into determining his fate, including abducting Hezbollah figures, offering rewards, and conducting intelligence operations. A 2016 joint Mossad-IDF assessment concluded Arad likely died in 1988, but the mystery persists. The IDF has reiterated its commitment to "return all our sons home," with future operations potentially continuing to address unresolved questions about Arad's disappearance according to IDF statements.
