India and US to Accelerate Military Hardware Purchases in Upcoming Defence Engagements

India will host two key defence engagements with the US this month to discuss accelerating military hardware purchases. The meetings aim to advance defence cooperation and expedite pending procurement projects, including the long-delayed delivery of F404 engines for India's Tejas Mk-1A fighter jets and additional P-8I aircraft. The two militaries will also hold their annual Yudh Abhyas joint military exercise in Alaska from September 1-4.

The meetings, scheduled despite ongoing trade tensions, will focus on accelerating the delivery of General Electric-made F404 engines for India’s Tejas Mk-1A fighter jets and additional P-8I maritime patrol aircraft [1].

A high-level US defence policy team will arrive in New Delhi mid-August, followed by a working-level 2+2 Intersessional Dialogue towards the end of the month [1]. Both meetings aim to advance defence cooperation and expedite pending procurement projects. The agenda is likely to include discussions on the long-delayed delivery of F404 engines and the procurement of additional P-8I aircraft [1].

India has received two F404 engines so far, with a third engine expected this month, and GE has committed to delivering one engine every month and two engines every month after October [2]. There are also talks for the follow-on order for the additional 97 Tejas Mk1A fighters for which approvals have already been made by the Ministry of Defence [2]. The deal for the follow-up orders for F-404 engines is almost finalised and is likely to be closed by the end of August [2].

The two militaries are also expected to hold their annual Yudh Abhyas joint military exercise in Alaska from September 1-4. Yudh Abhyas focuses on enhancing military cooperation, interoperability, and sharing best practices in counter-terrorism operations [1]. The exercise includes tactical drills, joint planning, and field training exercises that simulate real-world counter-terrorism scenarios [1].

These defence engagements underscore India’s commitment to strengthening its military capabilities and bridging capability gaps, particularly with the retirement of MiG squadrons and the expected drop in overall fighter strength to 29 squadrons [2]. While India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative prioritises indigenous fighter jets, foreign acquisitions remain an option to bridge these gaps [2].
