HPE originally claimed around $4 billion after civili suit win
The U.S. Justice Department has settled its antitrust lawsuit against Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and Juniper Networks, clearing the way for HPE's acquisition of Juniper Networks for $14 billion. The settlement requires HPE to divest its Instant On wireless networking business and license the source code for Juniper's Mist AI software used in Juniper's WLAN products [2].
The acquisition was originally challenged by the Justice Department, which argued that it would lead to only two companies, Cisco Systems and HPE, controlling more than 70% of the U.S. market for networking equipment. However, the settlement resolves these concerns, allowing the deal to proceed. HPE CEO Antonio Neri stated that the deal would offer customers a "modern network architecture alternative" tailored for AI workloads [2].
This acquisition is part of HPE's strategy to bolster its AI offerings and expand its portfolio to include switches, wireless access points, and routers. The deal was first announced over a year ago. HPE's stock has been performing well, with JPMorgan recently initiating an Overweight rating and setting a price target of $30, citing the company's undervaluation and growth potential [1].
The settlement also includes a requirement for HPE to divest its Instant On wireless networking business and license the source code for Juniper's Mist AI software used in Juniper's WLAN products. This divestment is aimed at addressing the Justice Department's concerns about market concentration and ensuring that the deal does not stifle competition.
The acquisition of Juniper Networks is a significant step for HPE, positioning the company as a major player in the networking sector. The deal is expected to close after receiving judicial approval, which is currently pending.
