House rules committee approves Trump's sweeping tax-cut bill
The House Rules Committee has approved President Trump's sweeping tax-cut bill, a significant step forward in his legislative agenda. The approval comes after weeks of negotiations and setbacks, with the bill initially facing opposition from a group of conservative Republicans. The bill, often referred to as the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," contains a range of legislative priorities, including extensions of the 2017 tax cuts, increased funding for immigration crackdown efforts, and cuts to certain social programs. It was initially voted down by the Budget Committee on Friday, May 16th, 2025, due to concerns over spending cuts and the federal deficit.
However, the bill was advanced by the House Budget Committee late on Sunday, May 19th, 2025, after adjustments were made to appease the four conservative Republicans who had initially opposed it. The bill was approved by a near-party-line vote, 17 to 16, with the four Republicans voting "present."
The House Rules Committee, which met early Wednesday, addressed two major hurdles: the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction cap and cuts to Medicaid. These issues were discussed in a meeting between President Trump and House Republicans on Tuesday, with Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and moderate Republicans reaching an agreement on the SALT cap.
The approval of the bill by the House Rules Committee paves the way for it to be considered by the full House later this week. Despite the progress, the bill faces significant challenges in the Senate, where Republicans have expressed concerns over its impact on the federal deficit and the national debt.
The passage of the bill has been covered similarly across the media spectrum. Fox News (Right bias) reported that the bill "survived a key hurdle" by making it through the Budget Committee vote. NBC News (Lean Left) noted that while the advancement is a positive sign, the bill will still need changes before securing votes in the full House and facing challenges in the Senate.
