Charles Hoskinson, the founder of Cardano and IOHK, has expressed strong confidence in the future of Cardano’s Hydra protocol and its potential to reshape the blockchain landscape. Speaking on Thursday, Hoskinson addressed questions about Hydra’s next steps, providing insights into its development, collaborations, and future plans.

Launched in May 2023, Hydra, a layer-2 off-chain scaling solution, is designed to improve transaction capacity and performance on the Cardano blockchain significantly. Since its launch, it has made impressive progress, attracting interest from various sectors. One of the key milestones in Hydra’s evolution has been the ongoing Hydra Doom initiative, an ambitious experiment launched last year to stress-test Hydra’s capabilities under extreme conditions. The initiative, taking place in Las Vegas, pushed Hydra to its limits through a competitive video game environment.

Hoskinson explained, “We chose a video game because video games are universally understood and have historically pushed the boundaries of what computers are capable of.” The results of the Hydra Doom experiment have been promising, with the Hydra protocol proving its capacity to perform in high-stakes environments. The success of Hydra Doom has sparked significant interest from investors and partners eager to integrate Hydra’s technology into their blockchain projects. Independent companies like Anastasia and Sunday Labs are already starting to develop their own Hydra infrastructure, further accelerating the protocol’s growth.

These companies will join the Input Output Innovation Group for several months of R&D, contributing to the continued development and integration of Hydra into Cardano’s ecosystem. Hoskinson explained, “The goal here is an iterative one, not a threshold one where we achieve some magic new level of capability.” The emphasis will be on continuous improvements, making Hydra increasingly applicable to gaming, decentralized finance (DeFi), and micro-payments.

Hydra has already shown significant value within Cardano, especially with the Midnight project, which has dramatically helped reduce costs. However, Hoskinson is particularly excited about Hydra’s potential in gaming, where he believes the protocol could unlock new opportunities for blockchain-based gaming experiences. “Hydra has proven it can do a lot of really cool and interesting things… and there’s a long road ahead,” he added.

Hoskinson’s comments also follow an update he provided last month, outlining his vision for Cardano’s growth in the coming years. In a video,
