Honda has completed a two-year pilot of its Proactive Roadway Maintenance System, which uses sensors in new cars to flag potential problems for highway departments to fix. The system detected damaged or obstructed signs with 99% accuracy, spotted damaged guardrails with 93% accuracy, and detected potholes with 89% accuracy. Honda aims to scale up the system and commercialize it, potentially saving $4.5 million annually in Ohio alone. The company hopes to empower customers to contribute to safer roads through anonymized data sharing from their vehicles.
