Charlie Kirk, co-founder and CEO of the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA, was fatally shot during a speaking event at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10, 2025. The incident, occurring amid heightened concerns over political violence in the U.S., has drawn widespread condemnation from political figures across the ideological spectrum. President Donald Trump, a close ally of Kirk, expressed his support on Truth Social, calling him “a great guy from top to bottom” and urging prayers for his recovery.

The shooting took place during a debate hosted by Kirk’s nonprofit organization at the Sorensen Center courtyard on campus. Videos shared on social media captured the moment Kirk, 31, was shot in the neck while addressing an audience. Witnesses reported immediate chaos, with the crowd gasping and scattering. Aubrey Laitsch, public relations manager for Turning Point USA, confirmed the shooting and expressed the organization’s prayers for Kirk’s well-being. A person was briefly taken into custody at the university, but authorities have not identified the suspect and have not advised the public to shelter in place.

The event had already drawn controversy. An online petition seeking to prevent Kirk from appearing at the university amassed nearly 1,000 signatures. In response, university officials reaffirmed their commitment to free speech, stating that the event aligned with the institution’s commitment to “intellectual inquiry and constructive dialogue”. Kirk had previously expressed concern on social media about the reaction to his visit to Utah colleges, asking, “What’s going on in Utah?”.

Kirk’s remarks before the shooting were on the topic of mass shootings and gun violence. An audience member asked about the number of transgender Americans who had committed mass shootings in the past decade. Kirk responded, “Too many,” before the question was followed by another about the total number of mass shootings in the U.S. over the same period. The exchange was interrupted by a single gunshot, after which Kirk collapsed.

The shooting adds to a series of recent violent incidents targeting public figures and political events in the U.S. These include the assassination of a Minnesota state legislator and her husband, a firebombing of a Colorado parade in support of Hamas, and a fire set at the home of Pennsylvania’s Jewish governor. The deadliest of these was the 2024 assassination attempt on Trump during a campaign rally.

Turning Point USA, founded in 2012 by Kirk and William Montgomery, initially struggled for prominence but grew into a significant force in conservative activism, particularly after the 2016 election. Kirk became a regular on cable news and a key ally to the Trump family, serving as a personal aide to Donald Trump Jr. during the 2016 general election campaign. The organization’s rise coincided with a broader surge in conservative youth engagement and political polarization in the U.S.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the shooting, including the adequacy of security measures at the event. Former Utah congressman Jason Chaffetz, a Republican and attendee of the event, noted that while some security was present, it was insufficient. He described the incident as out of character for Utah, a state he referred to as “one of the safest places on the planet”.
