The author was inspired to become a GOAL volunteer in Africa after watching the Live Aid concert 40 years ago. In 1986, they traveled to Khartoum with £10,000 in hard currency, where they helped write donor reports and articles on GOAL's work. Despite not having medical training, the author accompanied GOAL nurses on expeditions to the slums, providing desperately poor people with health services. They experienced the challenges of living in Khartoum and had limited social opportunities due to stolen traveler's checks.
