Researchers at IIT-Madras have developed a biodegradable packaging material from agricultural waste, such as cardboard and hay, using fungi like Ganoderma lucidum and Pleurotus ostreatus. The material is as sturdy as expanded polystyrene and can replace plastic foams, reducing India's 4 million tonnes of plastic waste annually. The start-up NatureWrks Technologies aims to commercialize and develop the product.
