Ford Motor Company files recall of 11,431 US vehicles: NHTSA

Ford Motor Company has announced a recall of 4,380,609 vehicles in the United States due to a software-related issue affecting the Integrated Trailer Module (ITRM). The defect, identified in model years 2021 through 2026, impacts trailer brake lights, turn signals, and braking functionality when the ITRM loses communication with the vehicle during startup according to Ford's recall announcement. Affected models include the F-150, F-250 Super Duty, E-Transit, Expedition, Maverick, Ranger, and Lincoln Navigator. Ford estimates that approximately 1% of the recalled vehicles are affected by the defect as reported by Car and Driver.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) noted that the issue could increase crash risk by reducing trailer visibility and control for drivers according to safety analysis. Ford reported no accidents, injuries, or fires linked to the problem but emphasized that the defect could render trailer brake lights and turn signals inoperable. A "Trailer Brake Module Fault" message will appear on affected vehicles' dashboards, along with potential warnings about the Blind Spot Assist System.

To address the issue, Ford plans to deploy an over-the-air software update beginning in March 2026, with owner notifications scheduled for March 17, 2026 as announced by Ford. Affected owners may also visit Ford or Lincoln dealerships for the update at no cost. The recall underscores the growing complexity of vehicle software systems and their potential impact on safety and operational reliability. Investors may monitor the recall's financial implications, though Ford has not disclosed specific cost estimates at this time.
